THE BATTLE OF THAWS

By Col. Ryen Kordova

The Imperial probe droid hovered over the snow dune scanning the surrounding landscape. But it failed to notice the end of a blaster carbine poking out of the snow. The carbine barked one then went silent as the droid exploded. A mans head rose above the drift and scanned the area in a 360 degree arc. He ducked back down and crawled back into an eight by eight tunnel. As he activated the hatches mag-lock the tunnels lights came on. He walked down the tunnel for about thirty feet and came to another door. He entered the code and disengaged the safeties. As he entered through the door the lights automatically went out. He heard a whirring noise and smiled to himself as the six infrared laser cannons snapped into place.

He stepped into a brightly lit room and came to attention as his commanding officer walked up to him.

"Well what did you find?"

"There is definitely an Imperial presence on the planet sir, the first two probes seemed like a coincidence but now a third I’d say there is definitely something going on."

"I understand, but damn it Major Jensen, if you had gone out there just 10 more meters we’d be scraping your remains off the snow."

"What?"

"There were two other probes coming towards your position."

"What do you mean I didn’t see anything?"

"I didn’t think that you would, they were holding positions on the opposite side of the dune."

Jensen gave him a sheepish grin.

"Then commander we must alert Ice Stations one and two and prepare them for the invasion. Because if we don’t then Thaws will fall, and Agamar will be open for attack.

"This is Ice Station Two we have walkers on the East Ridge." "Copy Station two what’s your status?"

"Minor casualties, managed to take down a walker with an artillery blast, but that’s about it. Wait a minuet there’s a pummel charging the wall…. it’s a suicide run! - It’s broken through the Main Line of Resitance and just ran down defence position five… its… it’s gonna blow...

A large explosion sounded in Jensen’s headset, as he tore it off. "

Commander Reboth, they’ve broken through the MLR on the East Ridge."

"What?"

"Yes sir the command post was taken out by kamikazes, a pummel to be exact."

"Aw hut spit…. I don’t want to bring out the 4th and 8th platoons yet."

"You don’t have to commander get lieutenant Magre, along with Capt. Sare and Sergeants Sauk and Taow Tell them to meet me in tunnel two."

"Done," replied Reboth."

There was an odd silence in the tunnel as the five commandos walked along. Each of them was considering their own fate. They reached the end of the tunnel. Jensen de-activated the mag-lock and cracked open the hatch. He fished around in his pocket for a moment and brought out a white repulsor holocam and slipped it out the hatch he activated the lifts and the cam drifted up into the sky. As it scanned the area Jensen looked at the feedback. There were six troopers and one AT-AT.

He motioned for Sarli to come up. She brought out a thermal detonator and primed it. With Jensen’s help she propped open the hatch and tossed the detonator at the troopers. It rolled to a troopers foot, he glance down and the explosion took out all six of the troopers at once. Jensen gave her the thumbs up sign and smiled.

The AT-AT marched past totally unaware of what just happened. It continued marching for about a half mile before stopping. The commando team crawled out of the tunnel. Over the next dune they saw Commander Crost a group of rebellion troopers battling it out with a bunch of Storm Troopers. Too much confusion... Thought Jensen, so instead he motioned for Sgt. Taow to come over and snipe the stormies out. Taow nodded and crawled forward he lined up his sights on the first stormie and started to depress the trigger when out of nowhere a thin green laser bolt came and went through the back of the Sgt’s helmet, totally blowing his head off his shoulders. Jensen looked up and saw two TIE fighters come swooping down at them. But one of them was picked off by an A-wing and it missed colliding with the second by mere meters. Jensen grabbed the sniper’s rifle and lined up the seconds TIE's cockpit in his sights. He depressed the trigger and a red bolt of light issued forth from the muzzle and sliced through the transpara- steel. It struck the TIE pilot in the face. The craft hurtled at Jensen now and he stood frozen to the spot. From behind Lt. Magre lunged at him and tackled him into the snow, with the fighter just missing them. "Thanks" he croaked. He got to his knees just in time to see the fighter go crashing down into the small skirmish below. A large fireball erupted and engulfed the area. Luckily Jensen’s commandos were behind the dune when it erupted and thus spared. But Commander Crost’s troopers did not fare as well. Upon impact seven of the 20 troopers were crushed along with two more dieing from burns. All the Imperial troops were killed. Jensen and his team ran down and offered aid to their fallen comrades.

Jensen crouched down and explained the next plan. The plan was fairly simple. Providing there were no more troopers around, two of the team would plant two detonators on the AT-AT’s front legs. Once they explode then the walker should go down. Jensen took one of his detonators and primed it, setting the timer for three standard minuets. Sarli did the same, and then signaled that they would charge on the count of three. "One, two… three!" they ran stumbling as they got close to the legs. Then the AT-AT stopped as if it knew it was going to be attacked. Sarli ran up to the left leg and Jensen the right. He attached the detonator and activated its timer. He glanced at Sarli and noticed that her face was white as the snow in fear.

Sarli Magre was surrounded by three storm troopers each with their blasters drawn. Jensen however was not noticed because he was behind the other leg. He glanced at his timer and then at hers they were five seconds apart the timer read one minuet thirty seconds. Jensen looked up and knew that he would have to act in the next sixty seconds or they would all die when the charges blew. He took out a stun grenade and depressed the prime switch. The thing started flashing and soon started to vibrate. He heaved it with all his might and it landed 10 feet away from the commanding trooper. Then there was a flash and a smoke screen appeared. Emperors black bones thought Jensen I threw the wrong grenade! Caught off guard the storm troopers start blasting wildly about. It was all the distraction he needed. Drawing his rifle he took quick aim and blasted two of the troopers. The remaining trooper panicked and started shooting wildly at anything that moved. One of the blasts caught Sarli in the chest and with a stifled cry went down.

"NO!" cried Jensen, he charged the trooper and shot him between the eye slits. He ran to her, picked her up and stumbled away as the timer ticked down to zero.

The resulting blast flung Jensen into a rock and blackness crept into his vision. He lost sight of Sarli. He tried to get up but his legs wouldn’t respond. He looked down and he couldn’t see his legs. He shook his head then looked again he could feel them now buried under a foot of snow. Sarli… he thought and he franticly started to dig him self out. Oh man oh man… he freed himself and stumbled over to Sarli who lay face down in the snow. He gently rolled her over and her eyes fluttered open. Oh god… he thought

]"Sarli I’m so sorry. I promised Delmi nothing would happen to you…"

"It’s ok." She looked around at the snow , "chill out."

She pulled up her parka revealing the armor plating she was wearing.

He breathed a sigh of relief. He helped her to her feet and the slowly walked back to the others.

Epilogue

The X-Wings soared overhead; a bright blue flash erupted from the nose of the lead fighter. The proton torpedo flew straight and true it impacted against the head of the last AT-AT and sent it down to the ground. Rebel troops surrounded it and Delmi Magre gave a triumphant hoot as he passed over Kale and Sarli. Sarli waved at him as he passed. The Rebels had won the battle. But victory had not been achieved with out losses of the forces stationed on Thaws, a third of them were killed or wounded in action. None surprisingly were captured. The entire Imperial force was lost or captured. Including the 50 troopers captured by the rebel ground forces there were 550 Imperial troopers and mechs and aircraft, to the 400 rebel ground forces along with the 50 Alliance spacecraft. Thrawn had lost his last battle because a few weeks later he was killed by his own bodyguard in a heated space battle against the New Republic space force over the Bilbringi shipyards ….
